Dustin McGowan already suffers setback with shoulder

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters on Wednesday that pitcher Dustin McGowan has had a setback with his throwing shoulder and will be "slowed down" at camp this week (TSN.ca).

With most players, we could probably write this off as something minor. But with McGowan, there's always cause for concern. He had surgery on his shoulder in 2008, 2010 and 2012. He missed all of 2009 and 2010, made only five appearances in 2011 and missed all of 2012.

The Blue Jays have a starting rotation of R.A. Dickey, Brandon Morrow, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle and Ricky Romero and also have J.A. Happ as a sixth starter. McGowan's issue is more about him and his attempted journey back to the bigs.

The 30-year-old McGowan went 12-10 with a 4.08 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 2007 and appeared on his way to being a quality big-league starter, but shoulder injuries have ruined his career. Let us hope for his sake the latest setback is merely a minor one.
