Chiefs general manager John Dorsey mum on quarterback search

Less than two weeks since the end of the NFL season, new Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey has yet to tip his hand on how his team plans to approach its quarterback search for the 2013 season.

In an interview with NFL AM on Wednesday, Dorsey indicated that the Chiefs' staff would meet later this week to discuss the quarterback prospects at next week's NFL Combine in Indianapolis. The Chiefs own the first overall pick in the NFL Draft for the first time in franchise history.

"You may think I'm dodging the answer, but we truly aren't going to get to the quarterbacks in our draft meeting, look at them entirely, until Friday and Saturday of this week, so I can't really give you a concrete answer on that," Dorsey told NFL AM.

Although seven quarterbacks have first- or second-round grades in CBSSports.com's latest projections, the 2013 class is generally regarded as a step below recent quarterback classes. If Brandon Weeden had entered the draft this spring, ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. believes the Browns quarterback may have been taken ahead of West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith or Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley.

If the Chiefs are unable to find a viable option in the draft, Dorsey could pursue a veteran via trade or free agency. Before coming to Kansas City, Dorsey spent 13 years in the Packers' front office, serving as the director of college scouting (2000-2011) and director of football operations (2012). In 2008, the Packers uncovered a late-round gem when they selected quarterback Matt Flynn in the seventh round. Flynn, now a backup with the Seahawks, could be available on the trade market.

Since 2009, the Chiefs have had a losing record when Matt Cassel has served in a starting capacity. Cassel appeared in only four games in 2012 after suffering a head injury in Week 5. The eight-year veteran ended the season with six touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

"I think Matt Cassel has demonstrated the skill to play in the National Football League," Dorsey told NFL AM.
