Ponder was taken by the Vikings with the 12th overall pick in the 2011 draft. After starting all 16 games in 2012, the 27-year-old has managed to only start 10 games in the last two seasons. For his career he has thrown for 6,658 yards, 38 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.
Former Vikings quarterback
Ponder, the No. 12 overall pick in the the 2011 NFL Draft, spent his first four seasons with the Vikings before becoming a free agent on Tuesday. He started 26 of 27 games he played in from 2011-12, but only made 10 starts over his final two seasons with the club. He tallied 1,057 passing yards with 38 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.
"Once they drafted Teddy (Bridgewater) and didn't exercise the [fifth-year contract] option, I knew my time was coming to an end most likely," Ponder said Monday, per 1500ESPN.com. "I've tried to enjoy this year and this season and we'll see what happens going forward."
Ponder didn't rule out a return, but it seems unlikely with Bridgewater and Matt Cassel still on the roster.
"[That's the] likelihood, yeah, but I'm not closing any doors. There's a chance I'll be back here, I think," Ponder said. "But I'm going to explore all options and see what's best for me and my family."
Ponder completed 22 of 44 passes, for 222 yards and two interceptions. He did not throw a touchdown during the contest. Ponder was constantly under pressure during the game. He was sacked six times. Due to constant pressure, Ponder was forced to settle for short completions throughout the start. When he did go long, Ponder's throw wound up being inaccurate. Ponder did manage to find the end zone late, running in a touchdown with his team down by 42. Ponder had 15 yards on three rushing attempts.
Ponder will take on the Lions Week 6 if Teddy Bridgewater is unable to play again.
