Steve Johnson: 49ers receivers aren't a 'bunch of pansies'
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

49ers wide receiver Steve Johnson has played the role of star receiver in the past and has had pretty good success in the role, totaling more than 1,000 yards in three straight seasons from 2010-12 with the Bills.

However, in his first year with the 49ers, he's competing for playing time and targets with a pretty deep group of receivers that include Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd

Johnson, though, is content with the situation. His focus is helping the 49ers make the playoffs, which would result in Johnson's first playoff appearance in his seven-year career.

"No frustration at all," he said, per CSNBayArea.com. “"(The) only sense of frustration is being a competitor, you know, wanting to do more. But it ain’t like there’s a bunch of pansies in front of me.

"It’s cool to a certain extent. When we get in those situations, in the heat of the moment, of course, I’m a warrior. I’m ready to go out there. We got great guys out there on the field. You can’t be frustrated. It’s not going to look right."

Hard to trust any 49ers receivers right now
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Though the 49ers have moved the ball well through the air this season, it hasn't led to much consistent success for their wide receivers, and that may not change much moving forward.

Anquan Boldin leads the team in yards, but has reached double figures in Fantasy scoring just once this season, in Week 6. He had 50 yards to finish third on the team in Week 7's blowout loss to the Broncos, behind both Steve Johnson and Brandon Lloyd. In fact, Lloyd and Johnson are both averaging more than 40 yards receiving per game, despite routinely finishing third and fourth on the team in snaps played among wide receivers.

The elephant in the room is Michael Crabtree, who should be the team's best option in the passing game. And yet, he has just seven more yards than Johnson on nearly 20 more targets. Crabtree has never really been a big-play receiver, but there is reason to think his current yards per catch number of 10.1 will rise close to his career mark of 12.7, which would obviously improve his value.

At this point, it is awfully tough to rely on any of the 49ers receivers, even if the team is putting the ball in the air 33.1 times per game, an increase of more than seven from last year. Crabtree might make for a nice buy-low candidate for Fantasy, but there also may not be much room for him to breakout until one or more players takes a back seat.

49ers WR Michael Crabtree held to 27 yards in Week 7 loss
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree caught four of his seven targets for just 27 yards in his team's 42-17 loss to the Broncos in Week 7.

While the 49ers averaged 11.1 yards per reception as a team Sunday, top options Crabtree (6.8 YPC) and Anquan Boldin (7.1 YPC) could find no room to work, leading to disappointing performances despite the offense dialing up 46 passes in the loss. Crabtree hasn't topped 50 yards in any of his last four games, and he owns 32 receptions, 322 yards and three touchdowns in seven games this year. The 49ers have a bye in Week 8 before facing the Rams the following week.

Michael Crabtree burns rookie for 32-yard touchdown
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

49ers wideout Michael Crabtree got Rams rookie cornerback E.J. Gaines turned around on a double move in the third quarter Monday. Colin Kaepernick found a wide-open Crabtree for a 32-yard score, his third touchdown catch this season.

Crabtree caught three of eight targets for 49 yards, his third straight game with under 50 receiving yards. He'll visit the Broncos in Week 7.

Michael Crabtree held to one catch
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

49ers receiver Michael Crabtree was limited to one reception in Sunday's win over the Chiefs, the first time he's caught just one pass since Nov. 13, 2011 against the Giants. Crabtree was targeted four times but managed only a 16-yard catch.

Crabtree has 25 catches for 246 yards and two touchdowns entering Week 6 at the Rams.
