49ers' Tomsula to unleash Colin Kaepernick as a runner?
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

The 49ers introduced Jim Tomsula as the team's 19th coach in franchise history on Thursday. Tomsula indicated that he could unleash quarterback Colin Kaepernick next season as a runner, a la 2012 when he averaged 6.6 yards per attempt and rushed for a career-high five touchdowns. He has only scored five touchdowns on the ground since 2012.

"I'm a big fan of running," Tomsula said, per Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

Tomsula, 46, has little head coaching experience.

He was the top boss of the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe in 2006. He has been with the 49ers since 2007 as coach of the defensive line, but was named interim coach on Dec. 27, 2010, following the firing of Mike Singletary. The team chose to go with Jim Harbaugh four years ago and now Tomsula will be Harbaugh's successor in San Francisco this time around. He did not reveal who he'll keep on staff during his presser.

Kaepernick registered season highs in attempts (104) and rushing yards (639) last season. He also passed for 3,369 yards with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, failing to reach the postseason for the first time in his career as a starter.

"I'm excited about the possibilities, about the things we can do with Colin Kaepernick and how we can help keep growing," Tomsula said, per the Bay Area News Group.

"I think he can run. I think he can throw. I think he can change the pace of the game. I think he's very intelligent."

Tomsula will speak with Kaepernick, as well as with Frank Gore and other members of the 49ers later on Thursday.

Kurt Warner wants to teach Colin Kaepernick to 'play with his mind'
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner will begin working with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick next week. Warner said Thursday he wants to teach Kaepernick to "play with his mind" rather than just his powerful arm and legs, per the San Jose Mercury News.

"It’s really going to be about seeing where he’s at as a quarterback and seeing how far we can push it to teach him how you play the game with your mind, as opposed to your arm and your legs," Warner said Thursday morning on CBS Radio’s Tiki and Tierney Show.

Warner said he is trying to help Kaepernick "grow" as a player.

"He’s gotten by on athleticism and he’s made some great plays and had some great games," Warner said. "But I think the goal is, in the time that I’m going to have with him, is just to see where he’s at and what he knows about the position and how far we can push the envelope as far as helping him develop as a pocket passer."

49ers' Kaepernick to train with Kurt Warner during offseason
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

Wanting to hone his quarterbacking skills, Colin Kaepernick’s agent told The Sacramento Bee Kaepernick will train with former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner during the offseason.

Warner is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback and four-time Pro Bowler. A traditional pocket-passer, Warner is expected to improve Kaepernick’s passing skills.

Kaepernick is coming off his least efficient season as a three-year starter for the 49ers. In 2014, Kaepernick was sacked 52 times which led the league. He also threw a career-high 10 interceptions.

He admitted he tried to improve his mechanics during the season, but was reluctant to do too much in fear of regressing.

"It's hard to break habits in season," Kaepernick said. "You don't want to completely try to change something because it can throw off everything else you're doing."

49ers' Colin Kaepernick tosses two scores in finale
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick tossed two scores Week 17 against the Cardinals.

Kaepernick completed 15 of 26 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns. He did not turn the ball over during the contest. Kaepernick was also active with his legs, rushing for 63 yards. His legs were certainly a factor on his first touchdown throw. Kaepernick looked as if he was going to take off before finding Anquan Boldin wide open in the middle of the field. Boldin was able to take the pass 76 yards for the score. Kaepernick's next touchdown wouldn't come until the third quarter. He hit Bruce Miller on a 3 yard strike.

Kaepernick finishes the year with a career-high 3,369 passing yards. He tossed 19 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. He also set a career-high in rushing yards, finishing the year with 639.

Long run doesn't change things for Colin Kaepernick
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Colin Kaepernick had another poor passing performance Week 16 against San Diego, throwing for a season-low 114 yards with one touchdown pass. But because he ran for 151 yards, most of which came on a 90-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, he ended up having a standout performance in Fantasy.

But when's the last time you saw a 90-yard run for a quarterback? It doesn't happen every week. Even as athletic as Kaepernick is, his season long was only 23 yards prior to Week 16. That 90-yard touchdown run was a 15-point play in standard CBSSports.com leagues, which means it was responsible for more than half of Kaepernick's 29 Fantasy points. Take it away, and his performance in Week 16 was just as disappointing as in his previous eight games.

Kaepernick hasn't thrown for multiple scores in nine games, averaging 189.9 passing yards during that stretch, and he's averaging just 137.5 passing yards in his last four games. Don't let this performance change your approach to him in the season's final week, when the 49ers visit the Cardinals.
