With Tony Romo sidelined,
Weeden played the first half of the game and hooked up with James Hanna for a 4-yard touchdown in the second quarter. He completed 13 of 17 passes for 107 yards ad a touchdown. He also had one run for a gain of 10 yards.
Weeden will likely be relegated to backup duties, as Romo is expected to return for the second preseason game, Aug. 16 against Baltimore.
"It’ll be good to be out there with those guys," Weeden said. “We’ve got some great offensive weapons. I’m excited to be able to go out and compete with those guys. It’s the first time with the star on my helmet, and it feels good. It’s very exciting."
Signed in the offseason, Weeden will back up Romo. Caleb Hanie and Dustin Vaughn are the quarterbacks behind Weeden.
"He just needs to play," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said of Weeden. "If you know his biography, his time he spent in baseball, a two-year stint at Oklahoma State and playing in a couple of different systems in Cleveland.
"He just needs to takes snaps. He has a lot of natural ability. You can see that. He is really good throwing the football. He can throw any kind of ball you want him to throw. He just needs to take snaps, and to see him grow when he gets an opportunity to take snaps, make mistakes, make plays and learn from it all."
But Dallas coaches have been impressed with Weeden, who took all the first-team reps during OTAs and minicamp while Romo recovered from back surgery.
"I’m going to go about my business the same way regardless. I haven’t met Kyle, so I can’t really speak on it, but whatever he decides to do – it’s kind of out of my control," Weeden told the team's website. "So what I’m worried about is, if I’m running with the twos out there, do my job to make the twos better. I want to make the team better any way I can, so it doesn’t change my mindset or the way I feel about it."
Weeden said his goal is to earn the backup job, regardless of whether Orton shows up.
"Well, that's the plan," quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson said. "That's one of the reasons we signed [Weeden]. We're still hopeful that Kyle will be here, but if he doesn't, we feel really good about Brandon, especially since he's going through our offseason program."
