Weeden is a healthy inactive for Sunday's Week 1 tilt with the Bears, the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson reports.
Weeden's inactive status essentially confirms that he'll open the season as the Texans' third-string quarterback behind Brock Osweiler and Tom Savage. Unless Osweiler succumbs to an injury at some point this season, Weeden isn't expected to don a uniform on game days.
Weeden was the third quarterback to enter Houston's preseason opener against San Francisco on Sunday. He played the final five minutes, missing his only attempt in Houston's 24-13 win.
Tom Savage entered after starter Brock Osweiler was removed and stayed in the game well into the fourth quarter. It could be the intent was to give Savage, who missed the entire 2015 season, a longer look. We'll see if the same quarterback pattern holds in preseason Week 2.
Weeden played for both the Cowboys and Texans last season, passing for 305 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in two appearances for Houston, where he'll remain this season. Although he's destined for a backup position, Weeden's signing serves as another indication that the Texans will part ways with fellow quarterback Brian Hoyer this offseason.
With the Houston Texans announcing that Brian Hoyer will start Week 17 against the Jaguars, Brandon Weeden will head back to a reserve role.
Weeden had filled in well for Hoyer, leading the Texans to two straight wins and putting them in place to clinch the AFC South with a win over Jacksonville.
Brandon Weeden completed 15-of-24 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns, and added 11 yards and a rushing score on two carries in Sunday's 34-6 victory over the Titans.
Weeden showed excellent composure in leading the Houston Texans to a 34-0 lead through three quarters, even contributing with his legs on a seven-yard scramble into the end zone for his first career rushing touchdown. Houston will have a chance to clinch the division in next week's season finale against a porous Jaguars defense, so expect the team's fourth starting quarterback of the season to pull no punches in trying to lead his squad to its first playoff berth since 2012.
