49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Will compete for starting quarterback job
by RotoWire Staff | Special to

Chip Kelly stated that he has "no idea" who will start at quarterback at this time, The Mercury News reports.

Colin Kaepernick never got traded and Gabbert is taking first-team reps during San Francisco's offseason program. The former is still not cleared to participate fully in physical activities, so the depth chart isn't telling at all. Kelly mentioned that when Kaepernick is at 100 percent, then the team will have a competition in camp leading up to the season. This is definitely a situation to monitor, as Kelly has made the likes of Mark Sanchez useful in fantasy with his up-tempo offense.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Throws for a career-high 354 yards in OT win
by RotoWire Staff | Special to

Gabbert completed 28 of 44 passes for a career-high 354 yards, with one touchdown and an interception, in Sunday's 19-16 overtime win against the Rams.

Gabbert had one of the most productive outings of his career, and set up the game-winning field goal in overtime by connecting with Quinton Patton on a 33-yard pass. While he generally didn't put up big numbers after taking over for an ineffective and injured Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) in Week 9, Gabbert certainly didn't embarrass himself, showing enough to possibly get him a starting job somewhere else, if not in San Francisco. With that said, he probably projects as a poor man's Alex Smith (both QBs are more athletic than one might think), and that's not really a great thing. In any case, he finishes the season with a 10:7 TD:INT ratio in eight games.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Throws for two scores against Detroit
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Blaine Gabbert connected on 22 of 33 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's loss to the Lions. He fumbled during the game.

Sunday represented Gabbert's first game with more than one touchdown pass since his first appearance of the season in Week 9 against Atlanta. Since taking over, Gabbert has accounted for more touchdowns than picks or fumbles in three of six games - or one better than Atlanta's Matt Ryan. That kind of so-so production is unlikely to prevent San Francisco from browsing for other options at quarterback this offseason or provide much confidence heading into Week 17's game against a Rams defense adept at getting after the passer.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Struggles against Cincinnati
by RotoWire Staff | Special to

Gabbert completed 30-of-50 passes for 295 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions in Sunday's 24-14 loss to the Bengals. He ran two times for 10 yards.

Against a solid secondary, Gabbert struggled to get much going, not throwing his lone TD until just 2:23 remaining in the game. He had done a good job protecting the ball before Sunday's three-turnover game, with just one interception over his previous four contests. In his defense, two of his interceptions were completely the fault of Vance McDonald, who couldn't secure two easy passes that were yanked from his hands by the defense. Gabbert has some athleticism to make plays with his feet, as was the case in Week 13 when he ran for 75 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown scamper that forced overtime, but he's rushed for just 29 yards over the last two games. Next up for Gabbert and the 49ers will be a road game against Detroit, who don't have a great win-loss record, but have an underrated secondary.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Lackluster performance in loss to Browns
by RotoWire Staff | Special to

Gabbert completed 18-of-28 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Browns. He also gained 19 yards on three carries.

The 26-year-old failed to top 200 yards passing for the second straight game, throwing one touchdown with no interceptions in each outing. Gabbert has done a good job protecting the ball over the past month, with just one interception in four games, but his safe style of play isn't fantasy-friendly. He carries little fantasy value at this time, and he will next face a Bengals defense that led the NFL in fewest points allowed per game heading into Week 14.
