49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Stays ahead of Kaepernick
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gabbert completed two of three passes for 14 yards, adding two carries for 15 yards, in Friday's preseason game against the Packers.

Gabbert drew the start and led the 49ers to seven points on two drives, whereas Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) eeked out just one first down on three series. Though far from impressive this preseason, Gabbert hasn't felt any real pressure from Kaepernick in the "battle" for San Francisco's starting job. Even with Kaepernick now healthy, Gabbert remains a clear favorite to start Week 1 against the Rams.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Will start Friday's preseason contest
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gabbert will start at quarterback in Friday's preseason game against the Packers.

Fellow quarterback Colin Kaepernick will make his preseason debut Friday night, but Gabbert will remain the first-team quarterback. Head coach Chip Kelly has not yet named his starting quarterback for Week 1, but Gabbert is the leader in the clubhouse having started the previous two exhibition games, and still holding onto the job despite Kaepernick being active Friday night.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: QB decision looming in San Francisco
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Head coach Chip Kelly has yet to name the 49ers' starting quarterback due to Colin Kaepernick's shoulder concern, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. "It's a competition, and Kap hasn't had a chance to perform yet," offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said. "So, when that happens and when coach [Kelly] feels like it's time, we'll do that. But right now it's not time."

Entering training camp as the co-No. 1 quarterbacks, Gabbert and Kaepernick were expected to split reps with the first-team offense in both practices and games, but the latter's bout with "dead arm" has forced Kelly to shelve his decision for the time being. With Kaepernick logging full practices both Monday and Tuesday, he declared an expectation that he'll play in Friday's exhibition against the Packers, which should reopen the battle for the top QB job in San Francisco. In six total drives this preseason, Gabbert has produced 14 points, while completing 10 of 19 passes for 132 yards and one touchdown.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Turns in acceptable outing against Denver
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gabbert completed six of nine passes for 69 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Broncos.

With Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) still unavailable, Gabbert played the first three series of Saturday's game, producing seven points before handing the ball over to Jeff Driskel. While Kaepernick seems to be making progress and could be available for the final two preseason games, recent reports suggest the starting job is Gabbert's to lose.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: One step closer to becoming starter
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

With Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) already ruled out for Saturday's preseason game against the Broncos, Gabbert takes another step closer to becoming the team's starter come Week 1.

We thought we would see a true competition for the starting quarterback job in San Francisco this preseason, but a shoulder injury has derailed Kaepernick's opportunity, opening the door for Gabbert to seize the job. While this news gives Gabbert a big lead, the 49ers' coaching staff has remained adamant about getting Kaepernick into a game as early as next week against the Cowboys, indicating that they still want to have a competition for the job heading into the season. That being said, time is becoming a major issue for Kaepernick and Gabbert may simply win the job by default, especially if the former isn't able to suit up next week either.
