49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Officially benched for Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Gabbert will serve as Colin Kaepernick's backup Sunday in Buffalo, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The much-discussed benching was finally made official Tuesday, with the 49ers announcing Colin Kaepernick as their Week 6 starter against a red-hot Buffalo defense. Now all he needs is to get his contract worked out. Given how poorly Gabbert has played, Kaepernick should get at least a few weeks to prove himself, assuming he stays healthy. If another change is eventually made, the Niners could go back to Gabbert or even give Christian Ponder a shot. The San Francisco offense will remain highly reliant on starting RB Carlos Hyde, who is somehow producing 4.0 yards per carry and 75 rushing yards per game for a team with no other viable weapons.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Could lose starting job
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

The 49ers' staff is meeting Monday to discuss whether Gabbert or Colin Kaepernick will start Sunday's game in Buffalo, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Gabbert has been consistently bad since Week 1, with his surprising rushing production negated (and then some) by his complete lack of accuracy. He's completing just 58 percent of his passes for 5.9 yards per attempt this season, with five touchdowns and six interceptions, though it's only fair to note that he doesn't have much help. The only other argument in Gabbert's favor is the distinct possibility Kaepernick could be worse, especially considering that the latter still hasn't quite regained all the weight he lost after having three surgical procedures in the offseason. A decision may be announced soon, but either way, running back Carlos Hyde remains the only trustworthy weapon in a flailing San Francisco offense.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Another pair of interceptions in Week 5 loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gabbert completed 18 of 31 passes for 162 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in Thursday's 33-21 loss to the Cardinals. He also tallied 70 yards and a touchdown on 10 rushes.

Although he was impressively effective throughout the night on the ground-- including a game-long 24-yard run that was part of an 82-yard scoring drive-- it was Gabbert's two mistakes through the air that played a key role in the loss. The veteran signal-caller's first misfire came late in the second quarter on a pass intended for Garrett Celek that ended up in the hands of Calais Campbell, giving Drew Stanton and the Cardinals the ball on the 49ers 21-yard line. Stanton parlayed the mistake into a 21-yard touchdown on the very next play, knotting the game at 7-7. Gabbert then gave the Cardinals the ball deep in his own end again on the first play of the fourth quarter with a second interception on a pass intended for Jeremy Kerley. The 26-year-old also took seven sacks despite his mobility, and has now failed to throw for at least 200 yards in four of his first five games. With the fans chanting for Colin Kaepernick after both of Gabbert's interceptions, and the latter struggling overall to maximize the full potential of head coach Chip Kelly's offense, a switch behind center is could come to fruition in the near future.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Crucial interception leads to loss versus Cowboys
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gabbert completed 16 of 23 passes for 196 yards, a touchdown and an interception in Sunday's game against the Cowboys. He added 27 rushing yards on 12 carries in the 24-17 loss.

Gabbert led San Francisco out to a 14-0 lead on the first two drives, but he was ineffective after that and managed fewer than 60 passing yards the rest of the game. He appeared competent as a runner at times, but his overall rushing numbers left a lot to be desired. Now 1-3 and averaging just 182 yards through the air after four starts, it remains to be seen how long Gabbert will remain the starter ahead of Colin Kaepernick. Things will not get any easier for Gabbert, as he will face the formidable Cardinals defense at home in Week 5.

49ers' Blaine Gabbert: Struggles against a tough opponent
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Gabbert completed 14-of-25 pass attempts for 119 yards and an interception in Sunday's 37-18 loss at Seattle. He also had five carries for 22 yards.

It was a brutal matchup for Gabbert, and he predictably struggled, failing to throw a touchdown pass. The 49ers managed to score a couple of times in the fourth quarter, but both of those were by Carlos Hyde from eight yards out. Gabbert's overall fantasy production the previous two weeks were respectable, but the offense has looks limited in general, and he's got just a 5.5 YPA for the season. In Gabbert's defense, the 49ers lack a true No. 1 wideout, as Torrey Smith has plenty of speed, but isn't an elite pass catcher in the mold of Julio Jones or Odell Beckham. In any case, he'll face the Cowboys at home in Week 4.
