Ankle injury hampered Chris Givens most of last season
by Larry Hartstein |

Rams receiver Chris Givens didn't use it as an excuse, but conceded a nagging ankle injury bothered him most of last season, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Givens had zero touchdown catches after an impressive rookie year in which he caught three scoring passes and produced a reception of 50 or more yards in five straight games.

"It’s been the longest offseason of my life,” Givens said at the start of the offseason conditioning program. "It’s just a constant reminder every day of what I didn’t accomplish — all because I got in my own way. So I’ve been waiting for this day for the longest (time)."

Different offseason approach has Chris Givens optimistic
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Rams receiver Chris Givens didn't score a touchdown last season, a stat that reasonated with him all offseason long. So when he had the opportunity to spend time with legendary trainers and stay in touch with Hall of Fame-caliber players, he didn't hesitate

Givens hooked up with soon-to-be Hall of Famer Aeneas Williams, who referred him to his long-time trainer Mack Newton. Givens also got in touch with Rams all-time receiving leader Isaac Bruce. He's spent the offseason working on the nuances of his game, including learning patience and how to set up defensive backs for big plays rather than just try to speed past them. He also recovered from ankle and shoulder injuries that hampered him.

Givens will have a shot at starting for the Rams this season, but he'll need a solid training camp to earn the job.

"I have some big goals and I have a lot of things I needed to change in my life," Givens told ESPN. "And just I really made football my No. 1 priority and that's all I have been doing is working on my body, getting in shape to run, not running to get in shape and just doing things the right way so I can be durable throughout my career."

Rams don't view receiver as a need
by Larry Hartstein |

Chris Givens led Rams wideouts with just 569 receiving yards, but general manager Les Snead doesn't think the team needs to upgrade at the position. “I think our receivers right now, I truly believe as they progress … we cannot have another receiver around here, and we’re going to be a good football team," Snead told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Rookie Tavon Austin led the wideouts with 40 catches, two more than Austin Pettis and six more than Givens.

Rams GM defends struggling receiving corps
by Marty Gitlin |

Rams general manager Les Snead defended his young receiving corps despite their lack of production in 2013. Chris Givens led the team with 569 yards through the air. St. Louis has not even featured a 700-yard wideout since 2008.

"Statistically, you've heard me say teams win, individuals don't," Snead told ESPN. "We're in this fantasy football type age, and I think if you look at seven of the top 10 pass-catchers, seven of the top 10 didn't make the playoffs. So yes, those guys are really good individual players, had great seasons, it didn't mean their teams made the playoffs."

The loss of starting quarterback Sam Bradford likely played a role in those poor numbers. It remains to be seen if the Rams draft a quarterback with their second overall pick, trade back with a team yearning for a quarterback or select a premier wide receiver such as Sammy Watkins of Clemson. Snead has declared an openness to swap the selection.

Rams get offensive contributions
by Larry Hartstein |

The Rams got a few minor contributions in their Week 17 loss at Seattle. Receiver Austin Pettis caught both his targets for 15 yards and running back Benny Cunningham had a 2-yard reception.

Wideout Chris Givens was targeted four times without a catch. He ran once for minus-4 yards. Receiver Brian Quick was unable to secure his lone target.
