The difference this year compared to last year is that Bell might get more rushing opportunities. One of the things that stuck out during new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi's press conference earlier this offseason was that he planned to base the Lions' new playbook off of his old one in New Orleans. In that playbook we saw scatback Darren Sproles have a role while more physical runners like Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram fill in other roles. While there's no doubt Bush could handle plays between the tackles, the prevailing thought is that Bell would pick up a bit more of that physical work if Lombardi were to stick to the system he's been in.
And obviously, Bush has been known to miss time here and there -- Bell would be a ball hog in any games Bush would sit out, just as he was in Week 3 this past year (Bell rang up over 130 total yards and two scores).
Bush is still the top runner in Detroit -- he simply has gamebreaking ability that Bell doesn't quite have. I'd expect him to be off the draft board by Round 3 regardless of format. Bell will have his roles and should serve as a good No. 3 Fantasy rusher. He's a must to pick up if Bush is an early-round selection for your squad. And I like Bell for your team even if you don't draft Bush -- think mid-rounds on him.
Now Bush is urging Detroit to retain Bell, a restricted free agent. The Lions are expected to offer Bell a second-round tender or sign him to a long-term deal.
"I think that’s going to be important to get Joique back," Bush told the team's website. "He’s a great player. He’s going to be in this league for a long time. He runs hard. I think it’s going to be an important offseason signing for us. We have to get him back."
Bush was limited on the ground, carrying the ball 14 times for 32 yards. He was more of a threat in the passing game, catching five balls for 33 yards. He scored on a 19 yard reception in the third quarter. Joique Bell remained involved in the running game, carrying the ball eight times.
Minnesota has been below-average against running backs this season, allowing them to score 18.87 Fantasy points per game. Through 15 games, the team has given up 14 rushing touchdowns. The Vikings are also one of the worst teams defending against receiving backs. Running backs have averaged 55.73 receiving yards against Minnesota.
That bodes well for Bush, who has 49 receptions this season. The bigger issue is how much work he'll get. With Joique Bell around, the team has two legitimate options in the backfield. Bell is the primary option when the team gets to the goal line, which further complicates the issue. Bush does have a good matchup, but, as usual, Bell will cut into his production.
Bush was striped by Jon Beason after a 3-yard run, which was recovered by Antrel Rolle in the second quarter. He has lost four fumbles this season. Bush watched Joique Bell score a 1-yard run in third quarter from the sidelines. Bell received the bulk of the load the rest of the way. Bush had 12 carries for 34 yards (2.8 yards per carry) and caught two of the four passes thrown his way for 10 yards in a 23-20 overtime defeat.
The Lions will end the season in Minnesota on Sunday.
