Falcons sign OT Jake Long to play-and-pay deal
by Rotowire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Offensive tackle Jake Long has signed a one-year deal with the Falcons that has a play-and-pay structure with no guaranteed money, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

The nature of this deal, with a good chunk of the money tied to incentives, indicates that Long's market has dried up for teams looking to take any risk on the 30-year-old, former first overall pick.

It's a low-risk deal for the Falcons, who will probably wait a while for Long to get into shape before working him into the depth chart. Long isn't likely to overtake Jake Matthews, but he could have a shot at time at right tackle if Ryan Schraeder underperforms. That is, of course, if Long can stay healthy.

Dan Quinn has announced that the Falcons have signed veteran offensive tackle Jake Long and have waived free safety Charles Godfrey to create a roster space for him. He is not expected to play in Week 2 against the Giants.

Long started all seven games he played for St. Louis last year after serving as a full-time starter for Miami for six seasons and earning four Pro Bowl berths.
