Anthony Spencer expected to be ready early in season
by Larry Hartstein |

The Cowboys are leaning toward putting defensive end Anthony Spencer on the 53-man roster instead of the PUP list to start the season, owner Jerry Jones told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The PUP list would make Spencer ineligible for the first six games.

Rehabbing from October microfracture surgery on his knee, Spencer is "getting there at a faster pace than we thought," Jones said.

With rookie Demarcus Lawrence expected to miss 8-12 weeks with a fractured foot, the Cowboys are thin at defensive end. Jeremy Mincey and George Selvie are running with the first team, and Martez Wilson and rookie Ben Gardner could get into the mix, reports the Dallas Morning News.

Dallas hopes Anthony Spencer can return from his microfracture surgery. He's currently on the PUP list.

Anthony Spencer could start season on PUP list
by Larry Hartstein |

Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer could begin the season on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to rehab from microfracture surgery on his left knee, reports the Dallas Morning News.

"We’re eyes wide open on this,” Stephen Jones, the club’s executive vice president, told the paper. "I won’t be totally surprised if he starts the season on PUP. Anthony thinks he might be back. I hope he does. We came into this knowing that he could be a PUP guy."

Spencer said it's possible he'll return toward the end of training camp.

Anthony Spencer targeting training camp
by Larry Hartstein |

Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer, who signed a one-year deal with the team Saturday, said he's making good progress in his rehab from microfracture surgery on his left knee. He's hoping to be back on the field when Dallas opens training camp July 23.

“It’s getting there,” Spencer said, via “I’ve probably got another month or so. When I had the surgery, they said it was a six- to eight-month recovery. I’m in the five- to seven-month range now. I just need to continue to get it stronger and stronger."

Spencer, who's been rehabbing at the Cowboys’ facility, said his familiarity with the training and coaching staff played a role in his decision to re-sign. "They know me the best," he said. “They know when I can push it and when I need some rest."
