Avril, who underwent a pair of core muscle surgeries this offseason, doesn't appear to be limited in the slightest during training camp and should be in full force for the Seahawks' preseason opener Sunday against the Chargers.
Avril (abdomen) recently underwent a second offseason surgery, USA Today's Lindsey Wisniewski reports.
Just like the first surgery Avril underwent six weeks ago, the details surrounding this second operation aren't clear. Most concerning, though, is that it's unknown if he'd suffered a setback in his recovery from the initial procedure. There is no timetable for his return.
The specific type of surgery has not yet been clarified, but the fact that it had not been heard about until after completion suggests that it was not anything major. Avril was tied for sixth in the league with 11.5 sacks in 2016 and figures to be a disruptive force for the
Avril totaled 1.5 sacks Thursday in a 24-3 win against the Rams, giving him 11.5 sacks this season, third in the league.
Avril leads defensive linemen in sacks and is two off the pace of league-leaders Vic Beasley and Von Miller. Avril snapped a three-game stretch, his longest of the season, without a sack.
Avril posted his league-leading 10th sack Sunday in a win against the Eagles.
Avril needs one more sack to match his career high set in 2011. Linebackers Lorenzo Alexander and Dee Ford also have 10 sacks. Among defensive linemen, the next closest in sacks is teammate Frank Clark and Cameron Wake with 7.5. He also got his 25th career strip sack, the most in the NFL since 2008.
