Texans QB Fitzpatrick takes positive approach to benching
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Just-deposed Texans starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick proved diplomatic in his response to his benching by Bill O'Brien.

"I don't like it. I don't agree with it," he told the Houston Chronicle. "But I've been in both sides of this situation. Now it's all about being a good teammate. ... I respect the heck out of coach O'Brien. He made the decision and explained it to me."

Ryan Mallett in, Ryan Fitzpatrick out as Texans starting QB
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Bill O'Brien has announced that Ryan Mallett has replaced struggling Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starting quarterback for the Texans.

Mallett is set to start in Week 11 against Cleveland, after the team comes off its bye. He has participated in just one game this season without throwing a pass.

O'Brien said via the Houston Chronicle that Mallett "certainly has a strong arm" and can throw the ball "as far as you want."

Texans QB Ryan Mallett clears the air about 'misconstrued' tweet
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Texans backup quarterback Ryan Mallett said Tuesday he is not lobbying to replace starter Ryan Fitzpatrick amid the team's struggles, per the Houston Chronicle.

"All I’m trying to do is be ready and get better," he said. "I always prepare like I’m the starter. I played behind Tom Brady (with New England). Obviously, I didn’t play much, but I prepared the same every week. I don’t expect anything less of myself."

Mallett had tweeted Sunday night following the Texans loss to the Eagles that he was ready to play: “I’m staying focused for when the time comes … seize the opportunity #justwaiting.” He then deleted the tweet and posted another one Monday: "Don’t misinterpret my last tweet. I’m not calling to be the starter. Frustrations of losing. I play my role. I am a team player first. Always."

"(The first tweet) kind of got misconstrued a little bit," Mallett said, suggesting that he was inspired to send out the original after watching Mark Sanchez step in for the injured Nick Foles and lead the Eagles to their victory over the Texans. "All I was saying is I’m ready. Just like Mark. If Mark wasn’t ready when Nick went down, it might not have gone that way for the Eagles."

Texans coach Bill O'Brien has said he will evaluate the quarterback position during the team's Week 10 bye.

Texans will evaluate quarterback position during bye
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Texans coach Bill O'Brien has opened the door for a potential change at quarterback following the team's fourth loss in five games Sunday against the Eagles. He said every position, including quarterback, will be evaluated during the team's Week 10 bye, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is at the center of the criticism amid Houston's recent struggles, which could prompt O'Brien to turn to backup quarterback Ryan Mallett.

"I don’t live in a hypothetical world," Fitzpatrick said.

Although, left tackle Duane Brown feels it's not fair for Fitzpatrick to shoulder all of the blame.

"He’s been playing well," Brown said. "We haven’t made it easy for him at all. It’s tough to make throws when you have guys in your face. They brought some good blitzes. Our job is to try to protect him the best as we can.

"Our offense is built around our running game. When we run consistently it elevates his play and gives us our best chance to win. This game of football’s a total team effort. You can pinpoint one player and criticize him too much. I don’t think he deserves as much harsh criticism as he’s getting."

Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick so-so in defeat to Eagles
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has been consistently mediocre this season, throwing for fewer than 300 yards in every game and managing no more than two touchdowns in any of them.

The same held true in a Sunday loss to Philadelphia. Fitzpatrick completed just 13 of 27, marking the first time this year he has hit on less than 50 percent of his passes. He racked up 203 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

He did have his moments. He found an open Arian Foster down the right sideline with a perfect pass for a 56-yard score late in the second quarter and cut the deficit to 24-21 early in the fourth with a 7-yard strike on a corner route to DeAndre Hopkins. But that was one of just three completions in seven attempts in the final quarter.

Fitzpatrick will have plenty of time to think about the defeat - his team is on a bye.
