No changes planned for Vikings at QB
by Chris Towers |

Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel struggled mightily in a 30-7 loss to the Patriots in Week 2, but head coach Mike Zimmer told the Pioneer Press Sunday he is not planning to make a change to rookie Teddy Bridgewater at this point.

"I'm going to hold the quarterback position just like every position here to the same standard, and I also said I wasn't going to have a quick hook," Zimmer said.

Cassel matched a career-high with four interceptions in Week 2, but does not seem to be at risk of losing his job heading into Week 3 against the Saints. And Cassel made no secret of his happiness with Zimmer's vote of confidence after the game.

"I do appreciate it,'' Cassel said. "There's no doubt about it.''

Patriots teach ex-quarterback Matt Cassel tough lesson
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel took on his former team, the Patriots, for the first time in his career. He got dominated. The Patriots picked off Cassel four times and sacked him six times as part of a 30-7 win. Cassel completed 19 of 36 passes for 202 yards with a touchdown to running back Matt Asiata on the first drive of the game.

Cassel will try to redeem himself at New Orleans in Week 3.

Matt Cassel tosses two touchdowns in blowout win vs. Rams
by R.J. White |

Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel completed 17 of his 25 pass attempts for 170 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception in his team's 34-6 blowout win over the Rams Sunday.

Cassel leaned on the rushing attack early but started to pick up chunks of yardage in the second quarter, finishing with an eight-yard touchdown to Greg Jennings late in the first half to make it 13-0. His second touchdown later in the game went to tight end Greg Rudolph in the fourth quarter.

While some will have an eye on when first-round pick Teddy Bridgewater will take over under center, the blowout victory should loosen the leash on Cassel as the starter. He faces a tough stretch moving forward, starting with a Week 2 home matchup with the Patriots.

Matt Cassel to face big pressure in Week 1 vs. Rams
by R.J. White |

Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel earned the starting job over rookie Teddy Bridgewater this, but many feel that the first-round pick will be under center before long despite head coach Mike Zimmer vowing not to have a quick hook. If that isn't enough pressure, the Vikings travel to St. Louis to face an imposing Rams pass rush in Week 1.

Cassel didn't light the field on fire in his first season in Minnesota, but he didn't struggle too badly either, considering the contstant merry-go-round carrying the teams' quarterbacks in and out of the lineup. He settled under center in December, completing 57.8 percent of his passes while averaging just under 240 yards per game and throwing seven touchdowns and six picks. Those numbers were even better when you consider he didn't face any creampuffs at the end of the season, with all five opponents finishing 7-9 or better.

Cassel figures to face a relentless pass rush Sunday, but he didn't perform all that poorly under pressure last year, tying for 12th in the league in accuracy percentage, per Pro Football Focus (minimum 25 percent of team's dropbacks). On his 67 pass attempts under pressure, the Vikings quarterback threw just one interception while scoring three touchdowns. That doesn't make him worth a look in Week 1 Fantasy lineups, but it certainly should make owners of other Vikings players a little more comfortable.

Vikings won't be quick to change quarterbacks
by Michael Hurcomb |

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said Wednesday he doesn't intend to have a quick hook with starting quarterback Matt Cassel. The veteran beat out rookie Teddy Bridgewater for the starting quarterback job this summer.

"We've gone seven, almost eight weeks now where we feel this is the way we want to go," Zimmer said, per "If we throw an interception the first play of the game, I'm not going to yank [Cassel]. I have to go on the OTAs and everything we've seen from there.

"I know the fans are excited about Teddy. I'm excited about Teddy. But we have to do what's best for the football team at this point, and what's best for the future -- and as you know, coaches' futures aren't necessarily very long. I'm always trying to think between the now and the future, and what's best for this organization as we go down the road."
