Alex Smith intercepted twice
by Larry Hartstein |

Playing without No. 1 receiver Dwayne Bowe and star running back Jamaal Charles, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith struggled Saturday against the Vikings. Smith completed 14 of 24 passes for 140 yards and no touchdowns with two interceptions.

Smith, who ran three times for 21 yards, has accounted for three turnovers and zero scores this preseason.

Chiefs yearn to expand horizons of Alex Smith in 2014
by Marty Gitlin |

Andy Reid and Chiefs quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy are working with quarterback Alex Smith to throw deeper balls more consistently this season. That word came from the start of training camp, according to ESPN.

"Let's let the ball rip a little bit," Nagy told Smith. "It's practice. Let's see what we can get away with and what we can't get away with so when the games come we know where we're at."

The Chiefs are seeking to make more big plays than they did a year ago. They believe that Smith, who threw just seven interceptions in 2013, can add the long ball without sacrificing accuracy or adding picks.

"We're a little more aggressive right now in training camp with some downfield throws as far as his decision making," Nagy added. "We're telling him to push the ball. You may see an interception here or there that he may not necessarily make in a game but we're telling him to do that, trust it and just see what happens. Now, when we get to a game, let's make the right decision."

A successful vertical passing game could create space to make explosive featured back Jamaal Charles even more of a threat in 2014.

Alex Smith on pay-as-you-go deal: No thanks
by Larry Hartstein |

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith told USA Today that he's not interested in a contract extension structured like the one the Bengals just gave Andy Dalton. That six-year extension functions more like a two-year contract, as it's essentially pay-as-you-go after Year 2.

"I want to get something that's right that I'm going to play out, absolutely, and that's definitely a focus of mine," he said.

Smith continues to hope the sides can work out an extension before the season. He's scheduled to make $7.5 million this season, the final year of his deal.

Alex Smith does little in first preseason game
by Igor Mello |

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith did not make much of an impact during Thursday's preseason opener against the Bengals.

Smith stayed in the game with the first-team offense for three drives and loss a fumble after getting sacked in the second series of the game. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 19 yards, averaging 3.8 yards per attempt.

The Chiefs will travel to Carolina to face the Panthers on Aug. 17.

Alex Smith will table negotiations at some point
by Larry Hartstein |

The Chiefs and Alex Smith continue to discuss a contract extension, but the quarterback said Wednesday that at some point he will table those talks, reports the Kansas City Star.

"You’re getting to the point where either way, you want it to stop being a distraction," Smith said. "You guys know how I feel about this, and it’s the truth."

Smith, 30, has one year left on his contract at $7.5 million.

"You’re finally gonna cross a line where it’s like, it’s just football from here on out and I’m done not only talking about it with you guys, but even behind the scenes as well," Smith said. "We talk about eliminating distractions and that’s a part of it. The focus needs to be on ball."
